The First Function — Palayamkottai, Tirunelveli
My father, Thiru T.N. Umapathy Sivan, is my role model. His life, his values, and the passion with which he lived — all of that lit a fire in me to help the people around us. He showed me, simply by how he lived, that one person truly can make a difference.
That clarity is why I chose education. It is the only form of help that truly keeps giving. A child who gets an education can find a job, build a skill, and support themselves and their family for the rest of their life. Everything else is temporary. Knowledge is permanent.
On India's Independence Day 2014, U. Namasivayam Vadivelan founded Nizhalgal Foundation and held its very first function in Palayamkottai, Tirunelveli. The Tirunelveli Mayor, Member of Parliament, and Member of Legislative Assembly graced the occasion — giving the foundation the dignity it deserved from its very first step.
Every Year, Without Fail
In the first year, 2014, a formal function was conducted to launch the foundation — bringing together the community, dignitaries, and the children. It was a moment of public commitment and celebration.
From the second year onwards, Namasivayam made a deliberate decision: no money would be spent on conducting a function. Every rupee — completely and directly — goes to the children. No event costs. No overheads. Just education support, year after year, based on his capability.
There is no institution behind this. No committee. One person, one promise, repeated every single year since 2014. The amount given changes with the year — but the commitment never does.

Thiru T.N. Umapathy Sivan did not teach his son with words. He taught by living — with generosity, with passion, with care for those around him. That example became the entire foundation of this work.

Founder & His Inspiration
The father behind the foundation. Thiru T.N. Umapathy Sivan lived with an extraordinary passion for helping those around him — a quiet, constant generosity that became his son's greatest teacher. He never gave instructions on how to help others. He simply showed how it was done, through the way he lived every single day.
His example is the reason Nizhalgal Foundation exists. His memory is the reason it continues.
Inspired deeply by his father's life and values, Namasivayam founded Nizhalgal Foundation on 15th August 2014 in Palayamkottai, Tirunelveli. He chose education deliberately — because unlike material gifts, it cannot be taken away. It equips a child to find a job, learn a skill, and build a life of their own.
Every year since, he has personally supported children's education — fees, books, uniforms, and job guidance — based entirely on his own capability, asking for nothing in return. This is not an organisation. It is a personal promise, renewed every year.
